Cesar Chavez dedicated his life to lifting people up. Through the power of his peaceful advocacy, Chavez brought farm workers out of the shadows and into the center of the fight for labor and civil rights. For Chavez, the struggle was never about grapes or lettuce, as he put it, but always about the people. Today we lift up his legacy and honor his lifelong mission to secure dignity, respect, and equality for workers across America.
We’ve still got a long way to go before we achieve the equity Chavez strived for. Essential workers – from janitors to farm workers to care providers – have shouldered an immense burden during the COVID-19 pandemic. When many of us transitioned to working from home, these frontline essential workers worked around the clock, risking their health and safety to keep our nation afloat during this terrible crisis. In their honor, and in the spirit of Cesar Chavez, let’s today pledge to continue our relentless fight for a $15 minimum wage, paid leave, universal healthcare, and expanded workplace protections for all.
